GRSE

GRSE: The Gamma Ray Spectroscopy Experiment was selected for study for inclusion on what became the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). GRSE was proposed by a consortium of 7 institutions, and was to be the high resolution spectroscopy instrument on CGRO. Unfortunately, it was not selected to go forward into the design stage for the mission. The scientific goals of the GRSE instrument were to obtain a better understanding of nucleosynthesis (the formation of the elements in stars and supernova explosions), accretion onto dense objects (black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs), strong magnetic fields (neutron star magnetic poles), and the interaction of cosmic rays with astronomical material.
